“Headteachers occupy an influential position in society and shape the teaching profession. They are lead professionals and significant role models within the communities they serve. The values and ambitions of headteachers determine the achievements of schools.'

The document, a slimmed down version on the 2004 standards brings school headship positions in line with other professions e.g. medicine, law, accountancy and others. This is rightly so too. A head teacher does occupy a key role as guardian of our nations future, children's future as adults will be greatly influenced by the quality of head teacher they get to experience in their school days. Progress of school staff also depend on the quality of a school's head teacher.
